Mediterranean tuna – caught responsibly and with respect for the sea
There are big differences between the fish products on the market. High-quality tuna that has been processed fresh and caught sustainably tastes delicious and can be eaten with a clear conscience. Preserved in good oil and packed in glass jars, tuna is also an excellent product nutritionally.
The tuna Olivo imports under the Campisi brand is caught with lures from sustainable stocks in the waters around Sicily. Founded in 1858, the Campisi family business has been cutting and jarring fish by hand for five generations. The local waters provide, among other things, high-quality bluefin tuna, Mediterranean tuna and anchovies, which are packed in good oil in glass jars.
About half of the bluefin tuna caught in the Mediterranean is sold to Japan, where it is a highly prized and expensive ingredient. It is used, for example, for sushi and sashimi.
Bluefin tuna, which can grow to several hundred kilos, has suffered from heavy overfishing with nets and seines, but over the past ten years the stock has recovered thanks to significant fishing restrictions and changes to fishing methods.
At Olivo.fi and in our Munkkiniemi shop, in addition to bluefin tuna fillet preserved in genuine olive oil, you'll find soft, flavourful tuna flakes cut from next to the backbone. Delicious Mediterranean tuna fillet in olive oil and anchovy fillets matured for 5–6 months are also available in glass jars.
